I’m not sure whether P. Allen Smith would articulate this in the same way, but I came to see his home and farm as a laboratory and living library bent on keeping alive healthy, happy living and growing practices from our history. I thank him for that.

Farming is changing. As is the way we view our food. And CSA has something to do with it.
I’m not sure I dig Triscuit’s newest campaign to support “home farming.” Kraft brands – Triscuit – is co-opting momentum in the local food, slow food, grow your own, or know your farmer movements.
There is nothing more beautiful than growing food for your family. I plan to grow the beans up the corn stalks adding a morning glory here and there. I know my immediate neighbors will continue to love my “mini-farm” but my hope is that other neighbors will see how pretty vegetable gardens can be.
It’s easy and rewarding to fight climate change by searching out local food. As part of Blog Action Day’09, I look at our options for local food in Pennsylvania.
Farmers on the Square opened June 3rd in Carlisle, PA and features local vegetables, cheese, meat plus a variety of foods from baked good to eggs, all produced within a 100 mile radius of Carlisle. They are literally on the square in front of the Presbyterian church each Wednesday from 3pm to 7pm.

New Food Safety Tool for Farmers

Last week, an online tool was released by FamilyFarmed.org, in concert with the USDA, to assist farmers in gaining certification that they are growing and handling food in the safest manner.
