Must Do Garden Events Saturday!!

I hope you haven’t filled your calendar for Saturday morning.  There are two great garden events happening Saturday morning.  One is in Carlisle.  The other is in York.  Both offer education, great plants and a chance to support wildlife.

Cumberland County Master Gardeners will hold their annual Plant Fest on Saturday May 15, from 8am to 1pm, in Carlisle,PA.  This year’s theme is “Gardening for Wildlife”.  The event will include a plant clinic, plant sale and a gardener’s yard sale.  Master Gardeners will be available to answer gardening questions and there will be gardening for wildlife educational displays.   Native plants, highly beneficial to wildlife, will be offered at the sale as well as other garden favorites.  Proceeds support horticulture outreach programs in Cumberland and Perry Counties.

The fest is held at the trial and idea gardens on the grounds of Claremont Nursing Home at 1000 Claremont Road in Carlisle.  Tours will be offered.  The idea gardens offers inspiration if you need ideas for your own gardens.

Another place to get great ideas for your garden and benefit wildlife is the MAEscapes Native Plant Sale also held on Saturday.

In York,  MAEscapes holds it’s annual educational event and sale.  MAEscapes stands for Mid Atlantic Ecological landscapes and it’s mission is to demonstrate and educate on the value of gardening with native plants to support wildlife.

For the first time this year, native plant vendors will be at the sale and offer their plants directly for sale.  Vendors include Doyle Farm Nursery and Heartwood Nursery.

MAEscapes has an impressive line up of speakers Saturday covering topics from native plants for difficult locations to spring ephemerals.

I know there is interest in meadows out there since I’ve had a couple questions from readers about establishing meadows in their garden.  It’s not a simple thing.

MAEscapes has brought in author Catherine Zimmerman to talk about establishing meadows.   Her book is Urban and Surburban Meadows, bringing meadowscaping to big and small spaces.  She will be giving her talk at 11:45 on Saturday.

MAEscapes Native plant sale is held at 112 Pleasant Acres Road at the York County Annex from 9am to Noon.

  1. If you missed the Cumberland County MG plant sale, try for the Franklin County one on Friday, May 28th – 3-6 PM, or come to both. Same kind of event. Divided perennials – tomato plants, including past winners of the Taste Test (Brandy Boy, Orange Strawberry, Maglia Rosa, Ceylon, etc.), heirlooms, hybrids, new varieties to be trialed this year, a table of extra starts from the 2010 container vegetable trials (peppers, eggplant, and cucurbits, too), and a table of historic vegetable varieties, the excess started to support the 4 square garden at Renfrew, and the demonstration garden at John Brown’s House.
