White House Kitchen Garden Replica Tour

Like a glimpse of the Obama’s vegetable garden? Well, hey, it’s not that easy to tour since it’s in the President’s lawn and all. Sorry.

But you can tour a pristine replica on a historic beautiful Pennsylvania farm. I’m not giving you much notice. It’s this Friday. Oct 30th,1pm-4pm.  Admission is free.
The garden is part of Fordhook Farm, the W. Atlee Burpee homestead. My favorite building was Victorian era seed house where I could almost see women working with seeds in Victorian era long dresses. The farm is still part of W. Atlee Burpee & Co.

The White House Garden has been faithfully recreated according to George Ball, chairman of Burpee and the person responsible for overseeing the replication.  Mr. Ball resides at Fordhook Farm.

“We used the diagram they provided to insure accuracy,” Mr. Ball said, “but we chose to make some alterations in view of soil conditions and typical weather patterns for the area.  We also mixed in some hybrids with the heirloom varieties which we knew would do well.”whitehousereplica3

“We were fortunate to have such a bountiful harvest, “ Mr. Ball notes, “so we decided to open it up to the general public before we shut it down.”

The event includes lectures on the hour and guided tours of the Garden.  Fordhook Farm is located at 106 New Britain Road, Doylestown, PA 18901seedbarn

  1. Sounds like fun, though there must not be a whole lot of living, food-producing plants at this point. Still, if I lived closer, I’d make the trip.
