More About David Walsh

There is something else I want to tell you about David Walsh.  He isn’t just a wine wizard.  He is a design wizard.

I love having this space to introduce you to interesting Pennsylvania gardeners.

In the case of David Walsh, he is obviously both an accomplished gardener and an interesting person.  I’m hoping he lets me revisit his gardens down the road.  But for now, I wanted you to know that you may own some of his work.

David’s artwork is treasured in numerous homes.  Sometimes it is used daily. Sometimes it is stored in china closets and handed down to children.  His work witnesses families marking occasions and celebrating holidays.  If you own certain patterns of Pfaltzgraff dinnerware or bone china, his art is in your home as well.

David who was born in England, moved to the states in the ’70’s, and landed in York in ’77 as a designer for Pfaltzgraff, a large casual dinnerware manufacturer based in York county.

During his tenure there, he designed many patterns, including some of the best known and most sought after: Folk art, America and Pistoulet.  He designed the most popular line of Pfaltzgraff dinnerware; a line called Tea Rose.  He was instrumental in implementing the bone china line that ultimately included upwards of fifty patterns.

“David was a good mentor to other designers as well,” Said Judy Bono, a merchandizing manager for Pfaltzgraff who worked with Walsh for many years.

David’s Pfaltzgraff patterns have passionate followers. There are several collector clubs and websites dedicated to the pottery.  There is even David Walsh fan club of sorts. Groups of Folk Art pfanatics have engaged David for plate signings and talks.

“ They love their dinnerware and they love David for designing it,” said Bono.

On to new things, David left the company and opened Circa Antiques.  His shop is on Market Street in York.

  1. York has few treasures as wonderful as Circa. My brother, Luis, and Jay have made many a trek from California to shop at Circa. We ourselves have purchased a couple of tables and chairs…..I love his garden stuff.
